The above poster is interactive. Click on the box in the upper right corner to make it full screen and click on the music notes to learn more about Coxeter and his works (there are 4 of them).

Why music notes?

Because, in addition to his love of mathematics, Donald Coxeter was also an accomplished piano player and composed many of his own works.

Check out the TVO documentary “The Man Who Saved Geometry” to hear some of Coxeter’s music and learn more about this fascinating mathematician.

HSM “Donald” Coxeter, Geometry, and the Beauty of Mathematics

Where do we find math? Everywhere! There is math in art, in music, in nature, in the cosmos around us and in the atoms that make up everything. Donald Coxeter, a math professor at the University of Toronto for over 60 years, loved mathematics, and specifically geometry. He saw it as a beautiful and rich subject and fought to save its place in mathematics research and education. He dedicated his life to promoting this rich and beautiful area of mathematics and we are dedicating our Science Literacy Week theme to him!

On Thursday, September 22nd we did a YouTube live presentation where we spoke about Donald Coxeter, his life, and his work – including his collaborations with famous artists like MC Escher.

The talk was recorded and can be viewed below. You can also use the form below to ask any questions of Dr. Pam you may have.
